According to the Public Playground Safety Handbook, there are more than 200,000 emergency room treated injuries that occur annually on public playgrounds. Forty-four percent (44%) of those injuries are caused by falls from the playground set, to the ground below. If proper protective surfacing material were used, many of these injuries can be prevented, or lessened. Protective surfacing under commercial playground sets is often an after-thought when purchasing an outdoor playground, however it is crucial that the correct surfacing material is used, and for the right area and use zone. ParknPool, a leading online distributer of commercial playgrounds, outdoor furniture and site amenities, has the knowledge and resources to help clients choose the correct playground surfacing material adding to new or existing playgrounds.
Due to natural weathering and general wear and tear, dirt and grass are not considered appropriate playground protective surfacing materials. Asphalt, concrete and carpet are also not appropriate, as they will not provide adequate cushioning in the case of falls. Appropriate surfacing materials for playgrounds can be divided into two groups: unitary surfacing material, such as rubber tiles, mats, poured-in-place rubber and artificial turf (similar to the Indianapolis playing field of Super Bowl XLVI); and loose fill surfacing materials, such as shredded rubber, manufactured wood chips, sand, and pea gravel. Unitary surfacing materials are ideal for playgrounds intended for toddlers (ages 6 to 23 months), handicap accessible playgrounds, or multi-use play areas. Loose fill surfacing material can be a more cost effective option, however as minimum required depths must be maintained at all times, more material must be used up front, and must be continually added.
According to the Public Playground Safety Handbook, loose fill surfacing material will compress at least 25% over time, due to weathering and use. As a result of their absorbing properties, different loose fill material will require different minimum fill levels. When choosing a protective surfacing material for commercial playgrounds, keep in mind that whether unitary or loose fill, dark colored surfacing can become hot if exposed to direct sunlight, and can cause blistering on bare feet.
To ease the commercial playground buying process, ParknPool staff has extensively studied the Public Playground Safety Handbook. For more information about ParknPool, or playgrounds and playground safety, call 877-777-3700.

Whenever anyone decides they want "a nice lawn," in essence, they mean they want a thick one. To a point, a thicker lawn will resist most other common lawn problems like weeds and insect damage. So how do you get your lawn thicker?
Use the Right Fertilizer at the Right Time
The easiest and cheapest way to begin thickening up your lawn is to properly feed the existing grass. Even if it is thin and anemic, it is easier to thicken what you have than to start from scratch.
Keep in mind, lawns are like people, the more they are fed, the thicker they get! With that in mind, when attempting to make your lawn thicker, feed it regularly. I recommend a treatment every 4 to 5 weeks.
Secondly, you need to use the right fertilizer. Nitrogen is not really the best nutrient for making a lawn thick. While nitrogen will give your lawn a spurt of growth, it won't do much for the long term root structure. Potassium and Phosphorus, on the other hand, will help strengthen those grass roots, and in the long run, thicken the top as well. Look for fertilizer composition with rates like 10-10-10 or 20-20-10 which is sometimes referred to as "starter fertilizer."

There are 7 sure ways that college students can sabotage their chances of getting that dream job. Collegiate Nation- GoCNCN.com has compiled this list to raise awareness on campuses. Social media background checks are in vogue. They will increase in 2012 and beyond. Students need to know the threat to their future is real.
1. Post on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ photos of yourself surrounded by beer and liquor bottles. Piles of weed, pills and white powder works too.
2. Use as many unprintable four letter words as you can.
3. Expose parts of your body that no one wants to see.
4. Post racist comments, promote sexist acts, and make fun of anyone that's different.
5. Brag about taking photos of exams with your smart phone. Offer to sell the exams.
6. Make sure you have many online friends that talk about their boss.
7. Don't forget to use plenty of apps and games, or hang with people who do.
Most college students probably don't know that at least 79% of U.S. hiring managers and recruiters have reviewed online information about job applicants, and 69% of HR professionals have rejected applicants after reviewing information posted on social media.
"It's perfectly legal for companies to collect dirt on college student, then sell it to an employer or recruiter. They can legally keep the information. So that dooms many college students," says Evelyn Castillo-Bach who is an outspoken privacy advocate and the founder of Collegiate Nation, the first and only private network exclusively for college students, dedicated to protecting student privacy online by banning ads, apps, games and other tools used by data collectors.
As part of its 2012 Privacy Made Simple campaign, Collegiate Nation - GoCNCN.com wants every college student to know that the threat is real. "Do the math. Most college students will have a thick file by the time they graduate, a file they may know nothing about but it's out there and being shared. That's the nightmare scenario looming," says Castillo-Bach also known as "Privacy Mom" because she was inspired to create Collegiate Nation - GoCNCN.com when she saw how her sons used Facebook with their college friends.
Company Information:
Collegiate Nation -- also known as GoCNCN.com-- is the first and only private network completely dedicated to protecting the privacy of college students. It launched in late 2009 and was reviewed by Read Write Web and the New York Times in 2010. In late 2011, the site was totally redesigned to meet the demands of its student members who wanted more features. Today, the site is open to all college students with an edu address. It is used in 30 campuses throughout the United States. Collegiate Nation is known for fiercely protecting the privacy rights of college students. It has banned ads, all third party apps and games because they are back doors to extracting private information. The founder of Collegiate Nation is Evelyn Castillo-Bach. She earned her M.S. in 1993 from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She has traveled extensively in Ethiopia and in the Balkans, accompanying her Danish husband who is a lawyer.

The poem Desert Places by Robert Frost tells of the narrator's sad feelings upon observing a snow-covered field. As he speaks, it becomes clear that the vast emptiness of the landscape is a reflection of the narrator's own personal sense of isolation.
The first stanza of the poem has an urgent feeling, as "snow" and "night" are "falling fast, oh, fast." The narrator is gazing into a desolate field that has only "a few weeds and stubble" to remind him that it is a piece of ground farmed by man. Soon, the narrator thinks, all of the field's distinctive features will be enveloped by the falling snow.
In the second stanza, the narrator acknowledges that the surrounding woods are all that possess the field, saying, "it is theirs." No other living creature has a claim upon it. The narrator himself is "too absent spirited to count." This phrase is the first indication of the narrator's depressed state of mind. He is lonely and feels isolated from the world around him. Because of this, he identifies with the bleak picture before him.
The third stanza reinforces the narrator's emotional condition. It contains three variations of the word "lonely," as well as a prediction that things will get worse for him before they get better. There will be "a blanker whiteness of benighted snow," we are told. Besides referring to the approaching night, this observation could suggest something about the narrator's emotional deterioration. He believes that his anti-social tendencies will continue to increase just like the falling snow. Like the snow, he will have "no expression, nothing to express."
The fourth and final stanza addresses the narrator's attitude towards the mounting snow---and his growing sense of despair. He has previously observed the scene before him with gloomy acceptance. Now, he rebels, declaring, "They cannot scare me with their empty spaces." He is talking about the field and all such similar places that make him feel lonely and isolated.
In the end, it is not the field---or places like it---that frightens the speaker so much as it is the world he has created inside his mind. His fear of self is made evident in the final two lines of the poem when he says, "I have it in me so much nearer home/To scare myself with my own desert places."
